Mathieu Frossard is a French artist and designer whose practice moves freely between art, craft and collectible design. Working primarily with ceramics, he creates sculptural objects that challenge conventional ideas of function, taste and ornament, transforming familiar forms into expressive, exuberant artefacts.
A graduate of the Design Academy Eindhoven, Frossard approaches clay as both a physical material and a cultural language. His pieces are predominantly hand-built and sculpted, embracing the traces of the making process while combining highly tactile surfaces with bold colour, metallic finishes and unexpected decorative elements.
Frossard draws from an eclectic vocabulary of popular culture, decorative arts and everyday objects. Rather than establishing a hierarchy between these references, he brings them together intuitively, allowing contrasting materials, symbols and aesthetics to coexist. Familiar motifs are displaced from their usual contexts and exaggerated, inviting new associations and interpretations.
Living and working in France, Frossard continues to explore ceramics as a medium capable of moving between sculpture and object, functionality and fantasy.
